Laser Cataract Surgery Technology

Laser Cataract Surgery TechnologyWe are pleased to offer patients the new standard in precision laser cataract surgery with the Catalys Precision Laser Cataract System. With Catalys laser cataract surgery, our trained ophthalmologists can provide a gentle, highly customized cataract procedure with precision not achievable with traditional manual techniques.

What is Catalys?

Developed by Silicon Valley-based OptiMedica Corp., Catalys is a new FDA-approved medical device that features a state-of-the-art laser, advanced 3D imaging, and many other innovative features that can bring numerous benefits to our patients for laser cataract surgery in Houston.

How Does the Catalys Work?

Every eye has a unique size and shape. Catalys’ advanced 3D imaging technology builds a 3D map of each eye and tailors the cataract surgery treatment to that map. This enables us to create a customized cataract surgery treatment plan that matches the uniqueness of each eye. Next, we use the Catalys to create a circular opening for accessing and removing the cataract. Clinical studies have shown that this opening is approximately 10 times more accurate when performed with Catalys than what is achievable by hand. Catalys then softens and breaks up the hard cataract into tiny pieces, allowing for gentler, easier cataract removal.

Depending on the patient’s pre-operative vision and desired visual result, we may recommend a tailored treatment plan that could include creating ultra-precise laser incisions in the cornea and a specific clear lens type, such as a multi-focal lens. This tailored treatment may reduce a patient’s need for glasses or contacts after the Catalys laser cataract surgery.

CenCenturion Vision Systemturion Vision System

The Centurion® Vision System is a state-of-the-art device intended for use in small incision cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) injection surgical procedures. This advanced technology system allows your Houston cataract surgeon, Dr. Justus Thomas, to emulsify and aspirate the cataract, while replacing aspirated fluid and lens material with balanced salt solution by using an intelligent platform that dynamically optimizes every moment of the cataract procedure.

The Centurion® Vision System’s Active Fluidics™ technology intelligently optimizes the anterior chamber stability by allowing surgeons to proactively set and maintain the target intraocular pressure (IOP).

This advanced, automated system is designed to enhance surgeon control compared to previous systems that used gravity fluidics and fixed pressure irrigation. Also, the new Centurion® Vision System provides a Balanced Energy™ solution for efficient and adaptive cataract emulsification which optimizes the amount of ultrasound energy used during the procedure.
